Weekend on the Arcachon Bay: the perfect itinerary between nature and the art of living

Want a seaside escape between sand dunes, pine forests, and a gentle way of life? The Arcachon Bay is an ideal destination for a weekend getaway. Between the ocean, oyster villages, and seaside elegance, here is our 2-day itinerary, starting from Pyla-sur-Mer, to fully enjoy the spirit of the Basin.

Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with friends, or family, this short stay offers a perfect balance between nature, relaxation, and local discoveries.

Day 1 - Dune, Beach, and Basin Spirit

Your weekend begins at Pyla-sur-Mer, at the foot of the mythical Dune du Pilat. After arriving and settling into the hotel La Guitoune, head to the dune for a memorable experience.

Climbing the highest dune in Europe is an experience in itself. As you ascend, the panorama unfolds: the Atlantic Ocean as far as the eye can see, the Landes forest in the background, and the shimmering Banc d’Arguin. Once at the top, take time to admire the breathtaking view.

For lunch, enjoy simplicity and local flavors. You can stay in Pyla for a meal facing the ocean or head to one of the nearby oyster ports in La Teste-de-Buch or Gujan-Mestras to enjoy oysters, shrimp, and a refreshing glass of white wine.

The afternoon is perfect for enjoying the ocean beaches of Pyla: swimming, surfing, napping on the sand, or a long walk by the water’s edge. The more active can rent bikes and explore the bike paths through the pine forest, between the pine shadows and sea breeze.

In the late afternoon, return to the beach to watch the sunset over the ocean. The sky lights up, the waves slow down, and the moment becomes magical.

Back at La Guitoune, enjoy dinner and the warm atmosphere of the hotel. After this day in the fresh air, a restful night awaits.

Day 2 - Arcachon, Boat, and Oyster Villages

Upon waking, enjoy a sunny breakfast before heading out to discover the heart of the Arcachon Bay.

Start with the town of Arcachon, just a few minutes away. Stroll through the market to feel the local pulse, then gain altitude in the Ville d’Hiver, famous for its 19th-century villas nestled in greenery. A walk full of charm and history.

By late morning, embark on a boat trip on the Basin. It’s one of the best ways to discover the area: Île aux Oiseaux, its stilted cabins, the oyster farms, or even a crossing to Cap Ferret to change shores.

At lunchtime, head to an oyster village for a simple tasting. Wooden tables, a view of the water, freshly opened oysters: here, the art of living is savored without artifice.

In the afternoon, take time for a final swim in the tranquil waters of the Basin, a walk in the small ports, or simply a moment of relaxation before heading back to Pyla.
